Today’s generation is often described as tech-savvy. This is probably why various tech and social media companies often target this particular audience with their innovations. However, this does not mean that older generations, including the elderly in home care, are not ‘ and should not be ‘ versed in computers and gadgets.

It is true that unlike their children and grandchildren, baby boomers and ‘ to some extent ‘ generation x are not very knowledgeable when it comes to technology. However, this should be changed because being tech-savvy has numerous benefits for the elderly. Below are some of them:

Gives a Sense of Independence

It is important for every individual ‘ including seniors ‘ to know that they can be independent regardless of their circumstance. One of the ways to make them feel independent is by learning how to use a computer or smartphone. These devices will open several avenues for them to explore, including the possibility of working from home. This will also enable them to earn their own income to support themselves as well as contribute to society without leaving the comforts of their home.

Keeps the Mind Sharp

A lot of research has been done to show that online activities, such as video games, help older individuals keep their minds sharp. Polish scientists studied subjects (with the ages of 65 to 75 years old) who showed an increase in their brain and cognitive longevity after undergoing training wherein they were taught how to play various games. A number of them were able to increase their sequencing abilities, expand their attention, and improve their memory!

Increases Social Interaction

Learning how to operate gadgets and use the internet can open so many opportunities for the elderly. For one, it gives them the chance to meet new people and effortlessly communicate with their loved ones anytime they want. With various social media sites available, the elderly can easily contact their family and friends using any gadget! This will help them feel more connected with their loved ones, avoid social isolation, andkeep depression at bay.

Access to Several Recreational Activities

Everyone knows that the internet is a fountain of information. By teaching your parents/grandparents to become tech-savvy, you are enabling them to access various information that will help them enhance their hobbies like gardening, writing, bird watching, golfing, scrapbooking, and knitting. Moreover, this will give them the opportunity to meet and bond with people who share similar interests. Just teach them to be wary of scammers and strangers.

A Sense of Fulfillment

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of learning how to operate a gadget and access the internet is the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that it brings. It’s a lot like learning how to play a new game or how to craft something out of nothing because it gives your older loved ones a sense of fulfillment. Overall, it creates a positive impact in their lives, as pointed out by the American Association of Retired Persons in their research paper. It also doesn’t hurt that they get to spend time with you as you teach them to be computer literate.

With these benefits in mind, encourage and teach your loved ones how to operate gadgets and access the internet!
